In honor of Chris Bosh's shot, this ESPN article on the man, and because a sharp-eyed Bulls fan agrees, here is the only basketball player who WAS his team's mascot. Chris, ya gotta go back to Toronto.
Dream Shakers (Shakas) – we’re not experts, former coaches, we don’t even have a left hand. We admire the game for the reasons all fans do: the NBA jams, double clutch layins in traffic, the hoodwinking dribble moves (not so much land-consuming crab dribbles, but I digress), the sweet passes, fast breaks, earth shattering blocks (my favorite), hard work husslin’…and swishes. That swish sound, with a slight crackle sound, well that’s just a sound that can’t NOT capture the imagination of even the casual fan. We also want to show our appreciation for the more “hardcore” nuances of the game like the pass before the pass, the screens, suffocating defense, and unselfishness of the team.
For all the stats and intricacies of the game, it’s ultimately a game that’s fun to watch because of athleticism, teamwork, and personality. We call ourselves Dream Shakers because no matter how much we learn about basketball, we’ll never depart from the imagination-capturing aspects that made us fall in love with the sport in the first place. The Dream Shake was Hakeem’s move, a move he learned playing soccer. We should hope to be so avante guard for anyone who wants a fresh look at this sport of sublime creativity and sky walking possibility.
